The Rescue & the Punishment

2 Peter 2:9-10, "then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, 10 and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority."

1 Corinthians 10:13, "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it."

God rescued Lot by all but dragging him out of town. God rescued Noah by decades of faithful ark building. God rescued Israel from a giant's power through a young man. God rescued mankind through a suffering servant born in a stable. God rescued mankind through His Son who died on a cross. This was God's plan and His Spirit works in us to fulfill that plan.

As we seek His rescue what do we avoid? From our reading this morning, we must avoid the lust of defiling passion and we must avoid the despising of authority; sexual sin and individualism, rampant immorality and "no one can tell me what to do." These both speak of indulging the self. It's all about me. This is not the way of the Christian.

Pray this morning asking God to show you the potential danger in your life of indulging the self. Where are you tempted toward immorality? Where are you tempted to throw off authority? Ask, 'What is Your rescue plan?' and, 'How does the gospel show me the better way?'
